AVG 8.5 Internet Security

AVG Internet Security provides complete security protection against all of the most serious Internet threats, including viruses, worms, spyware, trojans, adware, hackers and spam.

Regular readers will no doubt be aware of the fact that I recommend AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition over popular paid for rivals time and time again. Ignoring the obvious ?there?s no such thing as a free lunch? scepticism that I usually encounter whenever I talk about this application I?m typically also asked about the features missing; most especially a firewall.

AVG are aware that their free anti-virus package doesn?t cover the needs of all users so they have also shaped a security suite going by the name of AVG Internet Security.

Potentially the most important issue, it?s worth noting that the free edition of AVG Anti-Virus is not licensed for business use or for use on multiple machines; if you were planning to use the product at work or on more than one computer then upgrading is the only legal option.

AVG Internet Security offers the following additional features:

Firewall ? A firewall inspects all network traffic between your computer and the Internet in order to block unauthorized access to your machine. The firewall in AVG Internet Security is designed to be a more secure option to the way out bundled with Windows.

Spam Filter ? The included Anti-Spam filter prevents unwanted e-mails from reaching your inbox while also defensive you against phishing attacks. The anti-spam feature in itself will be precious to most users; especially those that have no use for certain male oriented medical products.

Anti-Rootkit Scanner ? A rootkit is a section of software designed to obscure the fact that a computer system has been compromised from both the user and anti-virus software. The purpose is that files can be changed and processes executed without triggering a conventional anti-virus scanner, including AVG free edition.

Identity Theft Protection ? Following their conquest of Sana Security at the beginning of this year, AVG have started integrating their software algorithms designed to detect unusual malware prompted behavior designed to draw off passwords, bank account details, credit card numbers and so on. There are also a few other bits and pieces chucked in, including Instant Messaging protection, free technical support and a safe download manager making it a pretty ample package.

Overview

This article discusses some essential technical concepts associated with a VPN. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) integrates remote employees, company offices, and business partners using the Internet and secures encrypted tunnels between locations. An Access VPN is used to connect remote users to the enterprise network. The remote workstation or laptop will use an access circuit such as Cable, DSL or Wireless to connect to a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). With a client-initiated model, software on the remote workstation builds an encrypted tunnel from the laptop to the ISP using IPSec, Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), or Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). The user must authenticate as a permitted VPN user with the ISP. Once that is finished, the ISP builds an encrypted tunnel to the company VPN router or concentrator. TACACS, RADIUS or Windows servers will authenticate the remote user as an employee that is allowed access to the company network. With that finished, the remote user must then authenticate to the local Windows domain server, Unix server or Mainframe host depending upon where there network account is located. The ISP initiated model is less secure than the client-initiated model since the encrypted tunnel is built from the ISP to the company VPN router or VPN concentrator only. As well the secure VPN tunnel is built with L2TP or L2F.

The Extranet VPN will connect business partners to a company network by building a secure VPN connection from the business partner router to the company VPN router or concentrator. The specific tunneling protocol utilized depends upon whether it is a router connection or a remote dialup connection. The options for a router connected Extranet VPN are IPSec or Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE). Dialup extranet connections will utilize L2TP or L2F. The Intranet VPN will connect company offices across a secure connection using the same process with IPSec or GRE as the tunneling protocols. It is important to note that what makes VPN’s very cost effective and efficient is that they leverage the existing Internet for transporting company traffic. That is why many companies are selecting IPSec as the security protocol of choice for guaranteeing that information is secure as it travels between routers or laptop and router. IPSec is comprised of 3DES encryption, IKE key exchange authentication and MD5 route authentication, which provide authentication, authorization and confidentiality.

Internet Protocol Security (IPSec)

IPSec operation is worth noting since it such a prevalent security protocol utilized today with Virtual Private Networking. IPSec is specified with RFC 2401 and developed as an open standard for secure transport of IP across the public Internet. The packet structure is comprised of an IP header/IPSec header/Encapsulating Security Payload. IPSec provides encryption services with 3DES and authentication with MD5. In addition there is Internet Key Exchange (IKE) and ISAKMP, which automate the distribution of secret keys between IPSec peer devices (concentrators and routers).

Once upon a time there was a time when our children could roam the streets freely playing merrily with their prams and tricycles while under no threat from evil doers. Alas, a different type of environment filled with pedophiles and murderers has changed all that. Parents are now enforcing protection campaigns not only on the street for the kids but in the home too. Children don’t have a childhood any more, living their life looking over their shoulder has them turn to the internet for comfort where danger lurks from one click of a mouse.

A recent news bulletin said our Government has given full backing to a report recommending video games be forced to carry cinema-style age classifications. This will be seen as a positive action from our government; however parliament gets no medals for this decision because it is a decision of necessity

At present only video games showing sex or deadly violence needs an age rating from the British Board of Film Classification and less than 2% carry an 18 certificate? A lawful-binding system would guarantee that every video game is rated in the same way as movies – which are classed U (universal), PG (parental guidance), 12, 15 or 18 – with the age regulation printed out clearly for parents who are not computer-literate. Kids today can outsmart the best of the best with their computer skills and can easily dupe mom and dad so be careful.

The government consulted with psychologist Tanya Byron and gave the thumbs up for her to look into this issue. It was Tanya who suggested that parents should be given computer lessons and guidance to help them avoid being outwitted by their off springs that have grown up with latest technology. She said an education promotion to alert parents and teachers of the risks of games and the web in general is vital. If this suggestion were made compulsory then children may well be safe from internet perverts and games of mind destruction. It does not end here, she also said a new code of practice aimed at regulating social networking sites, such as Bebo and Facebook, should be developed which would include introducing principals on privacy and harmful content. Additionally, there should be new laws banning web-assisted suicide and rightly so.

Sadly, even though concerned parents know of the risks involved they do not want to deprive the kids of their computer pleasures and fail to take action (Not all parents). One point that Dr Byron brings to light in her statement is that “The digital world risks are comparable to real world risks but can be improved by the anonymity and ubiquity that the online space brings.” Keeping children safe must be the top priority and responsibility of us all – so it is important for this decision by our government to be sanctioned asp. The internet is here to stay so we have to accept this and deal with it.

This important issue remains a priority for Government and the United Kingdom Council on Child Internet Safety, established by and reporting to the Prime Minister will lead on a national strategy for improving child internet safety.” There are a vast variety of options for parents to choose from to keep their child safe while surfing the net.

1 It is in your child’s best interest to have the computer local in the house and not in the bedroom.

2 Point out to the little ones on what is appropriate and what is not.

3 If by accident your child stumbles across an inappropriate website and comes to you with a question, then it is important to praise them for coming to you.

4 If there are times and there will be, that you can not be present while your child studies or plays games then you have the option of initiating parental control over the sites you approve of.

5 In your absence you can alter the computer settings so that you are in control of site surfing.

A simple configuration of Microsoft Internet Explorer will allow this, however not a good option if you have older children doing research for school or college.

Kids love chat rooms, however if left unsupervised in a gossip forum then it can create problems.

Chat rooms are generally anonymous which is quite scary. If your child is adamant on joining a chat room then give them some advice on how to keep safe.

6 Your child should use a nickname and never reveal his or her real name.

7 Not under any circumstances should they reveal where they live

8 Never tell anyone what school they go to or where they work.

9 Do not give out your home or their mobile phone number.

10 Never agree to meet someone without a parent or friend present

Now to give the government a kick up the back side to get the ball rolling so our children can enjoy the internet for the reason it was created, i.e. safe socializing, fun and entertainment and most importantly to learn.

Nowadays almost everybody has a computer and internet connections that we want to know is safe. There are different kinds of possibilities to make our computer safe from the viruses and from the malicious programs.

In China virtual cops take care of the Chinese internet users. The Beijing Police Force wants to have the attention of the internet users, with the help of virtual patrol, that they should avoid visiting the illegal and pornographic websites.

While surfing on the sites a cyber cop will appear in pop up window like an advertisement at the bottom of the screen every half an hour.

Next to the policeman’s figure a text message pays the users attention to respect the law. The figures also gives tips how to use the internet in a safer way while they running across the screen by a car or a motor.

The user can click on the patrol if he wants the police’s help and it navigates him onto the Police Force website.

Spyware, we all try to avoid it but it seem that in one point or another it usually manages to make its way into our PC. Not only is it annoying, but it can cause harm to the way out computers operate and even give away all your personal information to strangers.

What makes spyware so annoying is that most of the time it manages to find its way into our computers without us even knowing.

So, what can you do to prevent your PC becoming a spyware haven?

The first and most obvious way to not fall victim to spyware is to make sure you know what you are installing. A lot of freeware and shareware now days contain some sort of spyware that can be harmful. Make sure you only download from trusted sites such as www.downloads.com

Make sure you have some sort of preventive measure against spyware always installed on your computer. One in particular that is a must have for everyone is Spybot Search and Destroy. Not only is it free, but it will remove, prevent and immunize your PC against any types of spyware infections or intrusion. Most anti virus programs contain some sort of spyware removal tool as well.

Keep your Operating System updated at all time. Microsoft are constantly bringing out security patches to prevent nasties getting into your PC.

Avoid all forms of Peer 2 Peer programs. You may think downloading the latest songs is harmless but with Peer 2 Peer programs you never know what you’re getting, especially considering you are downloading off other people. And besides, its illegal.

If you see a suspicious e-mail with an attachment, delete it straight away. Only open e-mails from people you know and trust. Even if you do trust the sender it is strongly advised you scan any attachments with an anti virus program.

And finally, stay away from all those “free porn” and “free gambling” websites. Half of these sites require you to download some form of software of plug in for your browser, most of which are spy ware ridden.

So, what can you do if you happen to have spyware on your PC? And how can you tell if you’ve even been infected?

One of the major giveaways of a spyware infection is sluggish performance from your computer. If its taking you ten times longer to start up than normal or if programs simply wont load, there’s a chance you may have a spyware infection. If you’re getting pop ups while browsing the Internet, there’s a chance you have spyware. Notice a million new icons on your desktop that magically made its way there without your knowledge or consent? Yep, that’s spyware.

Luckily, the majority of the bad stuff can be removed with a simple spyware detection and deletion program, such as Spybot Search and Destroy. However, some of the more serious infections can mess around with your registry and major operating sytem files. Some spyware prevention programs may have trouble fully removing these types of spyware. If you find yourself in this sticky situation, its best to leave it to the professionals. Don’t go digging deep into you major files, you may just make things worse.

But then again, if you just follow my simple steps, you’ll never find yourself in that sort of position.
